A new search engine has launched that is looking to challenge Google’s place at the top of the search rankings.

一款新搜尋引擎已經上線，期能挑戰Google在網路搜尋服務的霸主地位。

Cuil, pronounced as ’cool’ and based on an old Irish word for knowledge, has gone live on 28 July and is backed by $33 million in venture capital, as well as the technological expertise of ex-Google engineers.

發音為「酷」的Cuil，其意思就是古愛爾蘭文的「知識」，已於7月28日上線，並有3,300萬美元創投資金以及前Google工程師的技術專業為後盾。

The brain child of Anna Patterson, whose search technology was bought by Google in 2004 to upgrade its own system, Patterson left the company in 2006 to focus on Cuil.

Cuil是安娜．帕特森的心血結晶，2004年Google借用她的技術來升級自己的系統。帕特森2006年離開該公司，專注於研發Cuil。

Patterson says that Cuil’s search index spans 120 billion web pages - and boasts that this is at least three times the size of Google’s index.

The search engine goes beyond common search techniques of link analysis and traffic ranking to analyze the context of each page and the concepts behind each query. It then organizes similar search results into groups and sorts them by category, in a magazine-like presentation
