Huntington Beach is taking its rivalry with Santa Cruz over the title of "Surf City, USA’’ out of the ocean and into the hands of lawyers, trademarking the name and chasing down businesses that infringe on it.

亨廷頓海灘槓上聖塔克魯茲，爭奪「美國衝浪之都」頭銜，現在戰線已從海邊拉到律師戰、商標註冊和追辦侵權廠商。

Huntington Beach, a Southern California town which boasts a surfing museum and a hall of fame, announced in May that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office had awarded it exclusive use of the title. Now it is enforcing its rights, sending cease and desist letters to anyone wading into its waters.

南加州小鎮亨廷頓海灘一向以擁有一間衝浪博物館及衝浪名人堂為傲，該鎮5月宣布，美國專利商標局已同意該鎮擁有「衝浪之都」的專利權。現在鎮方開始執行權利，對所有侵權者寄出存證信函。

One of its first targets, the Santa Cruz beachwear shop Noland’s on the Wharf, has been selling bathing suits and beach hats for nearly half a century. Santa Cruz is on the Pacific Coast about 120 kilometers south of San Francisco.

頭號目標之一是聖塔克魯茲碼頭上的諾蘭泳裝店，因為該店已經販賣泳裝、泳帽超過半世紀。聖塔克魯茲位於舊金山南方約120公里的太平洋岸。

The shop has been warned it has until Sept. 29 to stop selling a T-shirt sporting the words "Santa Cruz’’ and "Surf City.’’ Sales of the shirt have since skyrocketed, selling out and leading to a waiting list with nearly 300 names.

該店已被警告，必須在9月29日前停止販售印有Santa Cruz及Surf City的T恤。這款T恤從此熱賣，不但賣光而且登記預購者已高達300人。
