The Cannes Film Festival has generally been an inhospitable place for the United States since George W Bush became its president, but this year the festival warmly welcomed a former US vice president, Al Gore.
Gore came to the festival to present his film about the climate-change crisis, and indirectly to criticize Bush.
"Powerful polluting interests have way too much influence on the political system in the United States," Gore said after a screening of An Inconvenient Truth, a movie version of the slide show on global warming he has been giving for many years.
However, Gore was surprisingly easy on Bush and his administration, saying: "Even Bush and (Vice President Dick) Cheney will be forced to change their positions on this crisis. Mother Nature has joined the debate. Hurricane Katrina was a powerful warning."
In his crusade to save the world from an environmental disaster, the former senator from the state of Tennessee now has bigger fish to fry than to settle political scores, and he declared that he would not run for president again.
