It may have been laughed at by fashionistas worldwide, but Evo Morales' now infamous striped sweater has become a must-have item for those eager to emulate Bolivia's president and his refusal to pander to Western dress protocol.
Bolivian knitwear company Punto Blanco said it planned to manufacture 800 striped pullovers based on the model worn by Morales in his meetings with world leaders like Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and Chinese President Hu Jintao.
Morales, Bolivia's first indigenous president, has eschewed donning the traditional western suit and tie for meetings, preferring to maintain his own informal style.
"His attributes are being a different person, being an indigenous person, being someone with a different reputation from a traditional politician in Bolivia," said social analyst Gonzalo Mendieta.
Though European media went to town, mocking his informal wear, Mendieta sees no offense in Morales' decision to wear the clothes that he has always worn throughout his political career.
