Many parts of the world experienced extreme record-breaking weather conditions in terms of heat, rainfall or drought, a report by the World Meteorological Organization said.

Arctic sea-ice was rapidly disappearing. The extent of ice cover in September 2006 was the second-lowest recorded at 5.9 million square kilometers, just short of the 2005 record. It was decreasing at a rate of 8.6 per cent a decade.
Meanwhile, the hole in the ozone layer was equal in size to the previous record of 2000 with recovery not expected for another 50 to 60 years.
Parts of Europe, including England, the Netherlands and Denmark saw the hottest autumn since records began in the 17th century. Some European countries also had record-breaking summers. The US experienced its warmest January to September while seeing historic floods in New England in May.
