Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a nationwide inventory of cultural treasures to establish how many more artworks could be missing after a number of systematic thefts at St Peterburg’s Hermitage museum.

俄羅斯總統普廷下令全國對文化瑰寶進行盤點，以確定在聖彼得堡隱士廬博物館發生數起有計畫的竊案後，還有多少藝術品可能不翼而飛。

Putin told ministers to set up a commission to start work on the audit by Sept. 1, First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said.

普廷告訴部會首長，在9月1日前成立一個委員會展開稽核工作，第一副總理梅德維杰夫說。

"He has given an instruction that the Interior Ministry, Culture Ministry, Federal Security Service, Prosecutor-General’s office and other agencies should take part in the work of the commission," Itar-Tass news agency quoted Medvedev as saying.

「他訓令內政部、文化部、聯邦安全局、總檢察長辦公室及其他機構，都應參與該委員會的工作，」伊塔－塔斯社引述梅德維杰夫的話說。

Officials said that $5 million worth of enamel and silver artefacts had been stolen from the Hermitage, which houses works by numerous old and modern masters. Police have detained the son and husband of a curator.

An investigation revealed the museum had not conducted an inventory for decades. Art experts say Russian museums, galleries and archives have been chronically under-funded for years and that many more art treasures may have been stolen.
