Indonesia will launch a new vaccination campaign targeting 24.3 million children nationwide to halt a polio outbreak that has infected 122 youngsters, the health ministry said.
Two rounds of immunization on August 30 and September 27 will cost 230 billion rupiah (21.7 million dollars), Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari told a press conference.
Some 6.5 million children have been vaccinated since the first case of polio in almost a decade in Indonesia was detected in April.
Supari said that eradicating polio was made complicated by parents' refusal to have their children vaccinated owing to fears of harmful side effects.
Polio is believed to have returned to Indonesia via Saudi Arabia, either through migrant workers or Islamic pilgrims returning from Mecca, who may have passed on a strain of the virus originating in Nigeria.
