Fyodor Tyutchev, a 19th century poet, wrote that you can't understand Russia or measure it by ordinary standards, you can only believe in it－ and that's what U.S. President George W. I will remind him that if he intends to continue to look West, we in the West believe in Western values,'' the U.S. leader said last month.

measure: 動詞，指評判、衡量，通常與by 或 against 一起用，如 measure one's desires by one's fortune（用自己的財力來衡量自己的欲望）；measures his skills against his rival（拿他自己的技巧和對手相比）。

亦可指小心選擇或克制，如 measure her words to suit the occasion（她視場合小心說話）。

look into: 指向裡面看，可引申為調查、搜尋之意，look into somebody's eyes 則指正視某人。

subject someone to: subject在此作動詞，指讓某人蒙受、受到，如 pomposity subjects one to ridicule（傲慢自大只會讓自己受人嘲笑）。若作被動式 be subjected to則指受到……或被某事（所苦）。

scrutiny: 名詞，指仔細檢查、毫不遺漏地查看，如make a scrutiny into something（仔細調查某事）；not bear scrutiny（不堪深究）。
