The city administration in the Indian capital New Delhi has been paying old age pensions to around 10,000 people who are dead, a report said.
Tens of thousands of dollars worth of pensions were being deposited monthly into bank accounts of the deceased, The Hindustan Times said.
In addition, pension cheques were being sent to 27,000 people whose whereabouts could not be established, the mass-circulation daily said, quoting unnamed sources in the Delhi administration.
The newspaper did not say how much might have been paid out in error.
City authorities decided in the late 1970s to pay a 350 rupee (8 dollar) monthly pension to those over 60 living in deep poverty and those over 55 who are physically challenged.
